1.
The Creature 03:51
Verse 1: When I was alone Was always someone there When I thought I was down I knew up couldn't compare And I followed hot on your high heels handstands and cartwheels For my daily bread And I swallowed, hook lines and all till I was in thrall to the steps you tread Chorus: Here is the note I should have left by the phone From a sender unknown and marked in red And here's the coat I could've worn in the cold That might have consoled The creature under my bed And all of those times Now clamour to be heard All those unsolved crimes And reckonings deferred And I sing out For a last slurred song That rights all my wrongs And sends me to bed And I have no doubt If there's one thing I know Above or below It was left unsaid
2.
Magic Circle 03:47
If it was not on the level Would you let me know If sands were shifting beneath Our squarely planted toes Would you then sound the alarm while whistles rent the air And use your poise and your charm to smooth the ruffled hairs? Chorus: Everyone knows better than that they know crouching low wont save your soul in a crash But you know things, with mirrors and rings And soapy words that'll take out the sting when you saw us apart and together again We'll still pick a card from your deck And though I do doubt the shiny veneer And I know that a gleam is not all it appears I still love the feel of a breath in my ear And a hand in my pocket below Chorus: We are not babes in the wood We always thrown light on as much as we could Middle-8 Fool me once shame on you Fool me thrice thats a charm But when you prefer haze on a soft gauzy day to the glaring blaze of a winter sun's rays I didnt want it at all...x4 You gave me gifts Id just as soon give you back Filled up a suitcase I cant unpack Drove me so far off my well beaten track That Ill never find my way home
3.
Snow Day 03:27
Please take a number And get in line Behind greasy glass I swig a thermos full of wine Its never a school-night anymore don't you know? Its a four day week of the soul and the roads are clogged with snow Chorus And this is what I always used to crave When forever would invade the everyday This is what I always wanted Like a bunker in a raid And the speaker of the radio combs the music to a purr a soft bath of static that bubbles softly through the door I got you a sick note and I wrote it just right It says you're excused from the dying of the light Middle 8 Wont we say dear that then those, those were the times. The times when the sirens made you glad to be alive.
4.
Down Tools 04:15
What you stash in the drawer With the broken handle Is not a golden treasure Its not the spoils of a war The closer I get the more it shrinks away And I know that the hardest work Is when you're trying to play. Chorus: And thrown down tools seem to find a way (when you leave them and not when you stay) Come back to fool the one that threw them away (when you need them and no other way It seems that the young and the dumb know what you're trying to learn Cause they told you the deal was that things were only worth what you earned Well its not the biggest lie That youve ever been told Cause its true on winter nights when your insides are cold
5.
She checked out with a smile and left a tip with the girl lysol and hired hands washed her scent from the world And the rooms are the same even a blind man could see and the men behind the doors are really detainees Verse 2: Dont they all want, to wipe the sameness away to scrawl corruption, on a fresh coat of paint And thats what you do, you really take apart the little enclosures that are made for your heart Bridge: And everyone carves a name they think is theirs alone In the back row of desks plexiglass by the phone We poison the well of the good and the pure The pull of the broken The tarnished allure Chorus: And thats what it is, to make a mark on things To draw on your body, to gift a ring Saying here was an accident A riot of cells That spoke with an accent that had its own smell
6.
Simmer Down 04:26
The damned elite were rising Flying far beyond horizons Of your dreams Rising far above the playing fields Where they picked up the welts and weals Of men Riding pockets Of Stolen Air made of sighs of your despair You Simmer down So beautifully I Could never try To disagree And the crescent streets where you and I Made the names we both go by Are lost Smothered with a lullaby of Swimming pools and Azure skys They're gone Grass has grown around our feet While we lose our rising heat
7.
Broken Egg 05:12
I do not cry at the end of a man I never knew But I cannot bend to the will of a plan like you do Oh I beleive that you're saying something And It rolls from the heart of the earth And I can see that its better than nothing and I know that thats what its worth And all along the road ahead the scattered waste of the weak and the dead For every mile a broken egg so it goes. What ever you do Its alright, its alright What ever you say We turned day into night And I cant play with trick or treat though I try I can always see whats under your sheet is a lie And I know that its now or never And I know theres a sting in the air But I cannot commit to forever when I still feel the wind in my hair
8.
In your dressing gown on a road, you wave at the cars as they pass And your bare feet dance on the street as you skip past the shit and the glass And I watch you with wonder, as the cars rumble by And the heads as they bob behind glass Never pay you the meagerest mind Verse 2: And you're beating your wings in the hope that the ripple will rise to a wave And your hoping the world follows suit when you try to get them to behave And I told you they'll never, pose for you, and give you their actual names There wont be a day when they say that they'll play by the rules of the game Chorus: Fumbling around black in the night lost in the day Chances we found Visible light for breaking away Bridge: I only know , cause I learned it I can only speak, in a voice that broke So I'm telling you now cause you've earned it By tilting at things that once fell on me Who am I, well, who are you? Who is anyone, but what they become By listening to things, that they whisper In their own ears to block out the sound
9.
City Walls 04:42
I got written on my skin Whatever it said on my shirt at the time And the face I made when the wind changed Became the one that you know me by And the bindings on my feet became the plaque upon my door Chorus: And thats how you started to build Over lines that were easy to draw Spread yourself between rivers and hills And lay accident down as the law And the stones that are worn by your feet well they happen to lay as they fall And the names of your winding streets Are as weak as your city walls And now I whisper in my ear Things in a language I no longer know And I cant decide if they soothe me Like the places I used to go. And I strained at my own leash till my neck was red and raw
10.
Feet Of Clay 03:46
Leaving footprints on your doorstep Dragging mud into your hall Cigarette burns on my carpet While you walk before you crawl Taking leave of your senses On a dog day afternoon Falling sick with an illness To which you thought you were immune Chorus: Please excuse, my filthy shoes Cause Ive been blazing trails I shouldnt use Oh please forgive my how late it is Its been so long since Ive been so far away. Verse 2: Do not disturb on the door Thought you hung it for all to see But in crashes the cleaner to your muddled reverie Toast made on a candle and a sheet on a curtain rail the door missing a handle and a shirt hung on a nail

about

This is the 2nd solo Album of Declan Murray (previously of Indian/Irish band The Unseen Guest). Recorded in Dublin in 2012/13 , this album has a tight rhythmic feel bringing in influences from Talking Heads, to Television, to the Police to old-school Dub.

This was a labour of love, recorded in a a whirlwind in the Winter of 2013, with Declan jumping from one instrument to the other, playing everything from Drums to Rhodes Piano to guitars and bass. The result of years of him honing his style with various bands around Dublin on various instruments. If it is a departure from his older style, it is a welcome one, with a pulsing core and drama that raises up his introspective lyrics to new heights.
